Down Syndrome Connection

Connection Events:

*Our monthly meetings are typically held the 3rd Thursday on the month at the Anne Arundel Medical Center. (Monthly meetings are not held during the Summer;  please check below for dates and topics of scheduled meetings.)

AAMC is going through many wonderful additions and has moved our meeting location to the Health Science Institute on the same campus.  The Health Science Institute is located on the 7th Floor in the Health Science Pavilion.  You will park in Garage E, located at 2000 Medical Parkway, Annapolis, MD.  Please enter the Pavilion and take the main elevators to the 7th Floor.  (Please note that the elevator for the parking garage can not take you up to the 7th Floor).  There will be a concierge to direct you to the reserved room.

MONTHLY MEETINGS:

February 18th, 7:30 p.m.:  Presentation on Universal Design for Learning (UDL).   Presented by Mike McLaughlin and Amy Adams of the Maryland Down syndrome Advocacy Coalition (MDAC). Administrators, teachers, parents or anyone who is interested in learning more about Universal Design for Learning are invited to learn about UDL as a tool in the classroom to help provide meaningful instruction to students of all abilities.  This presentation is especially exciting because of the pending legislation regarding UDL.   http://www.udl4maryland.org/.  There will also be an update regarding other legislation in Maryland during the 2010 session.

Community Events:

Friends of ECI: Playdates every Wednesday from 5:15-6 pm.  They will have an open play session with trampolines, foam ball pit, swings, bars, climbing structures, slides and moon bounce.  The cost is $5 per child (half their usual price).  The address is 1612C Professional Blvd Crofton and playdates will run through January 23rd.  No reservations needed...just show up!   Please note that Rolly Pollies have asked us that playdates are for children in special education birth to five and siblings age 7 and younger. The reason is that often times, children older then age 7 do not play the same way and they need to have a safe environment for all the children.

Applications are available online at www.vmesolutions.org or by calling 410-554-9134.  Applications must be received at VME no later than Tuesday, March 31, 2009.  VME staff and volunteers will then select five (or more) winning applications. Wishes selected will be announced on or before May 1, 2009.  VME volunteers will then design solutions to help each winning family reach its dream of independence for their child with disabilities.  Projects accepted will be completed over the next year; additional projects may be considered for completion as time allows.

"Transition to Adult Health Care self-Advocacy Project" coordinated by the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger and the Parents' Place of Maryland.  Are you a young person or parent looking for a way to get out of those pediatric waiting rooms with small chairs and little kids?  This program is designed for adolescents and young adults with special health care needs, ages 14 - 25. Trainings will be held once per month for six months. Youth will earn $100 for participating. Participants will be assigned to a mentor who can help with the health care transition process, and will learn techniques to get involved in their own health care, including understanding diagnoses, medications, and treatments; health care decision-making; communicating with health providers; the nuts and bolts of insurance coverage; and the importance of nutrition, wellness and health promotion. Call (800) 390-3372 or Jackie Stone, project coordinator, at (443) 923-2792.
